Let me be absolutely clear on this – I will not sign an 287g agreement with ICE and I won’t waffle on that.
If folks are picked up in Buncombe or Henderson County by ICE they are sent to Fort Stewart in rural South Georgia where they are detained before they receive a hearing. That’s a long way from here and it’s difficult for family members to get down there and see their loved ones or offer support during detention.
The fact that they can be detained without counsel, I disagree with that.
The fact that they can be held indefinitely, I disagree with that.
Let me also say I support DREAMers. I hope our Congress can find a way to pass a DACA bill and I will use my platform as Buncombe County Sheriff to advocate for passage of that bill.
We’re better off because we have these brave young folks contributing to our nation.
